BERRY RANCH SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable. Unless someone out there has one ???)

In the 1860s a family by the name of Berry had a ranch 1 mile north of the north junction of the main Scotts Valley Road and west Scotts Valley Road. On a small hill east of the Berry Ranch and the county road, a primitive building was built in 1864. This was the only school in Scotts Valley until Pleasant Grove School was started in 1869. The Berry Ranch school closed when Pleasant Grove opened.

Children from the families of Hurt, Ferrell, Hendricks, Denny and Elkins, attended this school.

(There are conflicting reports about the school/schools of this time period. It is also said that about 1864 a school was built just south of the current Hartley Cemetery, called Pleasant Valley)
